What is PrEP Daily?
PrEP, also know as pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a daily pill you take that protects you against HIV transmission. PrEP is suitable for HIV negative individuals and starts protecting you after 7 days of starting PrEP daily. PrEP is available via the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme which allows you to access PrEP subsidised by the government which costs around $30~ for 30 days.
How do you take PrEP daily?
As the name suggests, you take 1 tablet every day, at about the same time.
Once you start PrEP daily as long as you are taking PrEP every day – you are protected after 7 days of starting
Who is PrEP daily good for?
PrEP daily is indicated for cis or trans men who have sex with men or take part in high risk sexual events
Timing is very important with PrEP on-demand
You only archive protection against HV if you follow the dosing schedule including taking it at the exact timing intervals.
If you miss a dose or you run out whilst taking PrEP on demand you do not have protection against HIV. In this case you will need to take PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis).
This is a 28-day course of medication that if taken within 72 hours after a potential exposure to HIV, may help prevent infection.
