What are the tests needed for PrEP?

Answer
Before PrEP can be safely prescribed, the following tests need to be completed at your pathology clinic.
- HIV status - required to be eligible to access PrEP at the subsidised price through the PBS
- Kidney function - to ensure your kidney function is normal. In some cases, PrEP can affect your kidneys if levels are not normal
- STI screen
The STI screen includes:
- Chlamydia (throat, rectal and urine)
- Gonorrhoea (throat, rectal and urine)
- Syphilis
- Hepatitis B & C
If you do test positive for an STI, it will not stop you from being prescribed PrEP - your Hey Fella doctor will get in contact and arrange treatment for your STI.
